State Great Hural and Secretariat honor elderly former officials ahead of Lunar New Year

On the eve of the Year of the Wood Snake, the State Great Hural and its Secretariat held a special gathering to honor retired officials who have served in Mongolia’s parliamentary institutions. The Secretariat's Elders’ Committee includes 120 former deputies of the People’s Great Hural, members of the Small and State Great Hural, and retired staff of the Secretariat.

Deputy Chairwoman of the State Great Hural Kh. Bulgantuya conveyed greetings from Chairman D. Amarbayasgalan, who had just returned from an extensive visit to nearly 40 soums across the western provinces following the conclusion of the autumn session. She emphasized the importance of continued engagement with senior statesmen and women, noting that their experience and insights would be invaluable in advancing key legislative and policy initiatives in 2025.

Expressing deep appreciation for those who played a pivotal role in establishing Mongolia’s permanent parliamentary system and its Secretariat, she outlined major legislative decisions made during the last session. Parliament has prioritized 14 large-scale development projects, including the long-delayed cross-border railway at Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod, the Mongolia-France uranium production joint venture, and the expansion of the Third Thermal Power Plant in Ulaanbaatar. She also highlighted key amendments to the Law on Senior Citizens, which took effect on January 1, introducing measures to support elder employment and the creation of a national senior citizens' fund. Additionally, she reflected on the National Congress of Elders and commemorative events marking the centennial of Mongolia’s first Constitution.

During the gathering, former Speaker and Chairman of the Small Hural R. Gonchigdorj and former MP Yo. Adilbish spoke on behalf of the attendees. R. Gonchigdorj expressed appreciation for the Secretariat’s continued engagement with retired officials and its efforts to seek their input on parliamentary affairs. Former MP Yo. Adilbish commended the 126-member Parliament for passing the first-ever deficit-free national budget and advised that energy sector reforms should prioritize management efficiency to minimize financial burdens on citizens. He also underscored the need for well-planned revisions to Mongolia’s tax laws.

Secretary General of the State Great Hural B. Baasandorj, along with First Deputy Secretary General Ch. Ariunkhur, Deputy Secretaries General U. Amarbat and E. Lkhagva, and other department heads, participated in the event. Speaking on behalf of the Secretariat, B. Baasandorj remarked on the honor of addressing those who had shaped Mongolia’s public service traditions and pledged to present their recommendations to the Speaker’s Council. He noted that 2025 marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of Mongolia’s permanent Parliament and Secretariat, as well as the 33rd anniversary of the adoption of the democratic Constitution, milestones that the Parliament’s leadership is keen to commemorate.

The event concluded with discussions on Mongolia’s socio-economic and political landscape, followed by a group photo session with the attending senior officials.
