On July 31, 2025, Mr. D. Amarbayasgalan, Chairman of the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia, held an official meeting with Ms. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Mr. Amarbayasgalan expressed his gratitude for the cooperation and support extended by the IPU and its member states in strengthening democracy and enhancing the legislative process in Mongolia.
He further underscored that, pursuant to the recent constitutional amendments, the number of Members of the State Great Hural (Parliament) was increased to 126 and a mixed electoral system was introduced. As a result, 32 women were elected to Parliament—positioning Mongolia among the leading countries in Asia in terms of women’s parliamentary representation and demonstrating concrete progress toward the targets set by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
It was noted that Mongolia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) in 2026. In connection with this, Mongolia is working to put forward an initiative to establish an advisory body on land degradation and desertification under the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Chairman of the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia, Mr. D. Amarbayasgalan, expressed his confidence that this initiative will receive active support.
President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Ms. Tulia Ackson, commended Mongolia’s efforts to advance gender equality and reaffirmed her support for such initiatives.
She emphasized that cooperation between the IPU and national legislatures plays a vital role in building a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
Ms. Ackson, who places particular focus on women’s empowerment and gender equality, expressed her support for the State Great Hural’s strategic goals—especially its initiatives to promote and protect human rights and to establish a human-centered legal environment, as outlined in its Strategic Plan.
