Today (2 September 2025), a delegation led by O. Tsogtgerel, Chair of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group in the State Great Hural (Parliament) of Mongolia, paid a courtesy call on Gerard Brownlee, Speaker of the House of Representatives of New Zealand, who is visiting Mongolia on an official visit at the invitation of Chairman of the State Great Hural D. Amarbayasgalan.
MP O. Tsogtgerel expressed his pleasure at welcoming Speaker Brownlee and his delegation to Mongolia. He reiterated his gratitude for the warm reception the Democratic Party parliamentary group received during their visit to New Zealand in February 2025. He also noted that Mongolia has applied the New Zealand parliamentary experience by amending the Law on the State Great Hural and related legislation, including transforming the Prime Minister’s reporting session into a parliamentary question time during the spring 2025 session.
MP Tsogtgerel emphasized that both Mongolia and New Zealand uphold parliamentary democracy and that Mongolia aims to learn from New Zealand’s experience to enhance transparency, oversight, and citizen participation.
Speaker Gerard Brownlee noted that the two countries’ parliaments are similar in size and face comparable challenges, expressing his support for ongoing exchanges on democratic governance. He highlighted the successful development of bilateral cooperation in agriculture and project implementation and acknowledged the mutual study of experiences aimed at strengthening democratic systems.
During the meeting, participants exchanged views on the advantages and challenges of mixed electoral systems, the characteristics of parliamentary parties, and similarities and differences between the two countries’ parliaments.
